Realigning my thoughts

I realized i need to realign my interpretation of the first text after sitting in today's class before it slowly fades away.

I might have oversimplified the concepts and definitions of the text, overlooking many crucial aspects mentioned in NLG's article. While i understood that the three realms of our existence - working, public and personal lives results in multiliteracies, i neglected the what and how of pedagogy. All the while i thought that the basic principle of a pedagogy of multiliteracy was to address the multiple layers that each individual has, which when i think about again is quite unrealistic. I believe, there is no end to the layers that will be laid upon an individual because in every different social and cultural context, a different kind of literacy emerges. Hence, it would be difficult for educators to ensure that all possible literacies are covered. Rather, it is about building and instilling the attitude to learn and adapt to a different kind of literacy in different social and cultureal contexts. This is where i guess looking at the differences in meaning making, critically, comes in - to understand and learn about the features and purposes of different literacy so that this skill can be carried with them to truly be multiliterate.

After all, education and literacy is political by nature, and depending on the country's political stance, we as educators need to direct meaning making such that it meets the set of underlying political goals that have been set for us.

  1. Yup definitely true that education is greatly influenced by politics. Education act as a medium in which our government ideolgies get "transfered" to the young.
